A great day for our country.
On January 20, 2025, President Trump issued a proclamation amending the birthright citizenship policy of the United States. This is a great day for our country.
Speaking only for myself, I think Executive Order 14160 is good policy and good law on a proper reading of the Fourteenth Amendment.
It should be welcomed by all patriots and constitutional originalists, and even by its critics, many of whom rightly point out that it gives the Supreme Court an opportunity to revisit the issue. Good. We need that review.
The Supreme Court should uphold the order and restore consent-based citizenship. Whether it upholds it or not, Congress should enact the constitutionally correct policy.
As I’ve written elsewhere, executive action to curtail birthright citizenship is fully compliant with the Constitution.
But the best way to resolve this issue is with carefully crafted legislation.
Congress, do your job.
This leaves the door open for the Gov’t to revoke anyone’s citizenship born here & whose ancestors here born here also. This is a bad idea!!
Incorrect. Trump is not creating a slippery slope to arbitrary revocation of citizenship. He is proposing to stop automatically granting citizenship to a child born on U.S. soil when both of the child’s parents owe their political allegiance to a foreign power. Which is consistent with the 14th Amendment. And he proposes to do it prospectively, not depriving any existing citizen of his or her citizenship.
