Apocalypse Now (1979). Ah, the smell of napalm in the morning! Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece. A classic and a must-see. A surreal war film that isn’t about war. A road picture that has no destination. An action-flick in which nothing happens. A pretentious art film, crammed with allusions to Homer, Shakespeare, Eliot, and the Bible, and who knows what else, that never feels pretentious. And like all the great classic tales, somehow familiar yet never trite. And oh by the way, very entertaining. Loosely based on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, it takes our hero up-river to find the mysterious madman, Kurtz, setting the story in the Vietnam War rather than nineteenth-century Congo. There are three versions. The original theatrical release (1979) is, in my opinion, the best and ideally seen first. Coppola’s longer Redux (2001) and Final Cut (2019) versions are beautifully remastered, and include about an hour of interesting and sometimes disturbing material cut from the original, but lack the original’s superior pacing. I suspect the purpose of the additions (slightly longer in Redux than Final Cut) is to clarify some of Coppola’s intended classical allusions. For example, I think Robert Duvall’s Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore (‘I love the smell of napalm in the morning’) is the Cyclops and the Playboy Bunnies are the Sirens and the French widow is the nymph Calypso. I have not found any other reviewer who has picked up on this Homeric allusions. In the original, these allusions are obscure, verging on invisible. (The French widow doesn’t even appear.) Many reviewers say this film is best experienced on a gigantic screen with booming sound, and I believe them. Coppola once proclaimed, ‘My film is not about Vietnam. It is Vietnam.’ And I can’t really argue with that. See it!

Blade Runner (1982). I like both the original 1982 theatrical version and the 2007 ‘final cut’ version. See both.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1921). There are many versions of this film. I give the gold medal to the 2014 digital restoration by the Murnau Foundation, distributed by Kino Lorber. Painstakingly remastered from a rare, nearly complete original negative, this version includes optional English subtitles and a choice of two alternative musical scores, one spare, the other richer.

Curse of the Demon (1958). I’ve only seen the 82-minute American release version of this well-made horror flick directed by Jacques Tourneur. There’s also a 95-minute British release version (titled Night of the Demon) that is said to be a bit better.

Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler (1922). Four hours long. I watched the Murnau Foundation restoration distributed by Kino Lorber.

Fanny and Alexander (1982). I’ve only seen the original 188-minute theatrical version. There’s also a 312-minute television miniseries version.

Exorcist III (1990). I’ve only seen the original theatrical version. I would like to see the posthumously produced ‘director’s cut.’ Blatty was smarter than his producers.

Forbidden Planet (1956). A gem I never tire of. There is occasionally talk of a remake, but you cannot remake a gem. That said, I would hope someone, in a future remastered version, would polish it up, gently. Here, for what they’re worth, are my recommended tweaks: 1) Digitally smooth away the glaring jump cut in the final scene. 2) Digitally remove the visible zipper on the back of Ann Francis’s body suit in the innocent nude-bathing scene. And, in a couple of scenes where silence would work better, get rid of the distracting ‘electronic tonalities’ background music. The overuse of the ‘tonalities’ seems to be an artifact of the decision by MGM executives to skip final edits and rush the rough cut directly to theaters in the wake of positive test screenings. I’d also tighten up a few scenes that feel draggy. And finally, I’d gently update the planet-in-space shots and matte paintings, to make their flaws less obvious. But only gently. Never over-polish a gem.

Lincoln (2012). A great film, indeed a near-masterpiece. It would be a true masterpiece if it omitted the superfluous hagiographical material at the beginning and end and just began with Lincoln’s dream and ended with his departure for Ford’s Theater.

Metropolis (1927). There has never been anything quite like this unique classic of the silent era, a film at once essential and awful. Fritz Lang’s direction leaves something to be desired, and yet his bold vision is unforgettable and in some ways remains unmatched. A big-budget flop on release, the film has been edited into many different versions, none of them satisfying. But if you view only one, make it the 2010 Murnau restoration distributed by Kino Lorber. It is the first version since 1927 that includes virtually all of the film’s famous lost footage, nearly a quarter of the original running time. Some of the restored footage is in poor condition. But this version is close to Lang’s original, 1927 vision. And what a vision.

Night and Fog (1955). Francois Truffaut called this harrowing documentary about the Holocaust ‘the greatest movie ever made.’ He’s right.

Once Upon a Time in America (1984). I have only seen the 229-minute European release version of this long, slow, yet never quite boring film, which some regard as Sergio Leone’s magnum opus and a masterpiece. I can see the greatness in it, but a masterpiece? Not to me. A film this long should have a lot fewer mysteries and gaps, and at least one likable character. Some say a longer, 269-minute restored version answers better to Leone’s vision for the epic. Maybe so, but I have no desire to see it. Once through Once was enough.

Over the Edge (1979). Actor Matt Dillon’s first film, and my only one. Yes, I appear as an extra in this late-’70s teen-angst flick, filmed mostly in Greeley, Colorado, and my home town of Aurora, a Denver suburb. Weeks of work garnered me a grand 3 seconds of screen time. Check out my unforgettable performance, which, in addition to making the film, also appears in the film’s trailer at about the 36-second mark.

Red River (1948). I am eager to view the original, but now rarely seen, theatrical release version, which in lieu of inter-titles has narration by Walter Brennan.

Song of the South (1946). Zip-a-dee-doo-dah! A charming animated classic that has sadly fallen victim to the PC thought police. The film may be imperfect, but it is by no means racist, and Disney is wrong to suppress it. Viewers should be allowed to judge for themselves.

Star Wars (1977). Han shot first. 

Touch of Evil (1958). I’ve only seen the original 1958 version. I also hope to see the ‘restored’ version, which is based on Welles’s notes. Either way, everyone should see the famous long opening shot.

Post-Credit Scene: Some Final Thoughts

I love the great silent films, because they have to tell their stories visually, with a minimum of dialogue. And of course, they’re universal.

My favorite directors are Kurosawa, Chaplin, and Renoir. I’m also smitten with Tarkovsky, who is in a class all by himself. But his work is an acquired taste, and probably the reason they invented the fast-forward button.

I’ve also enjoyed films by (in alphabetical order): Altman, Antonioni, Bergman, Capra, Coppola (father and daughter), Daves, Fellini, Ford, Frankenheimer, Friedkin, Hawks, Hill, Hitchcock, Huston, Kubrick, Lang, Lester, Lumet, Melville, Scott, Spielberg, Sturges, Truffaut, Wilder, Wise — apologies to the many other fine directors I’ve omitted. I confess I don’t care much for Orson Welles, Woody Allen, or the Coen Brothers — all overrated, in my opinion, despite some real flashes of genius. Scorsese, to my surprise, rarely does much for me. I’m not sure why. I did enjoy Taxi Driver, and Cape Fear and Goodfellas have their excellences. Buñuel nearly always makes a Buñuel film, alas. Von Trier and Tarantino are troubled souls — pray for them!

Regarding sequels, my feeling is good films don’t need them and bad films don’t deserve them. But I did enjoy Godfather II and Empire Strikes Back. I’ve never viewed Godfather III and don’t plan to.

P.S. Prequels are a public nuisance.
